Call queue: what it means in call management, explained by Dialmio

Dialmio defines call queue this way: A list of calls waiting to be made or answered. In outbound work it is a calling list; in inbound work it is customers on hold waiting for an agent.

Updated 17 June 2026 · Definitions checked September 2026

The phrase means two almost opposite things depending on which direction the calls travel. In cloud telephony, a queue is people waiting on hold for the next free agent, with hold music and position announcements. In a call management app, a queue is a list of numbers waiting to be dialled: today follow-ups, missed calls to return, a fresh batch of enquiries.

Confusing the two is a common source of mismatched buying. A business asking for call queues because customers ring and wait needs inbound routing, which is telephony work. A business asking for queues because its callers need an organised list to work through needs a dialer and a pipeline.

For a small outbound team, the queues that matter are the ones with a time attached: callbacks due today, missed calls not yet returned, leads assigned but never rung. Each of those is a list somebody should be able to open and clear, which is a very different requirement from hold music.

Which terms sit close to call queue, and what do they mean?
TermWhat it means
CallbackA call a business owes somebody: either returning a missed call, or ringing at a time the customer asked for. Both need an owner and a time to survive.
Missed callAn incoming call nobody answered. For most small businesses it is the cheapest lead they lose, because the customer had already decided to make contact.
IVRThe recorded menu greeting a caller and asking for a keypress before passing them on. Valuable on incoming lines, near pointless on outgoing ones.
Auto dialerSoftware that works a list one number at a time and pauses after each conversation, leaving room to file the result before the next number rings.

From teams using Dialmio

How do customers describe call queue?

It pauses for an incoming call and then carries on from the same place in the list. That one small thing is the reason the team kept using it after the first week.
Pooja K.Admissions counsellor, PuneJun 2026
Our ceiling was ninety calls a day for as long as I can remember. The second week on the dialer the same people did a hundred and sixty on the same list.
Rashmi B.Team lead, outbound sales, HyderabadJul 2026
We set the gap between calls to thirty-five seconds so the note gets typed before the next customer answers. Our data went from rubbish to reliable with one setting.

What do people ask about call queue?

Does Dialmio provide inbound call queues?

No. Holding customers in a queue and routing them to a free agent is cloud telephony work. Dialmio handles calls on ordinary handsets, so an unanswered call becomes a callback rather than a hold position.

What queues does a small outbound team need?

Three: callbacks due today, missed calls not yet returned, and new leads not yet contacted. If each of those can be opened as a list and worked to empty, most of the value has been captured.

Is Dialmio a call tracker or a CRM?

Both, inside one record. A bare call tracker tells an owner how many calls were made. A CRM tells the team what was discussed and what comes next. Dialmio logs the call and pins the outcome, the note, the follow-up and the WhatsApp to the same lead, so tracking and selling share one screen instead of two tools.

Does Dialmio need a virtual number or cloud telephony?

No. Each call goes over the SIM in the handset, so the customer sees the same mobile number they have always known, and the call is charged on the mobile plan that phone is already on. There is nothing to rent, no IVR to configure and no telephony bill at the end of the month.

What happens when a number that is not a lead calls?

The call is logged like any other, and the caller can convert it into a lead from the after-call sheet with one tap, source marked Incoming. A number that rings twice becomes one record with two calls on it, never two records.

Should I set Dialmio as the default phone app?

Yes, if you want incoming calls to open the customer thread and every business call to end with the after-call sheet, rather than only calls begun from a list. It is a single tap during setup, and ordinary dialing, contacts and dual-SIM behaviour stay exactly as before.

Is Dialmio cheaper than other call management software in India?

Usually, once WhatsApp and reporting are added up. Published Indian prices for this kind of tool sit anywhere from about 100 to 800 rupees per user per month, and a few charge WhatsApp separately or reserve reports for a dearer plan. The fair comparison is the yearly figure for your actual caller count, with everything you plan to use included.

What is Dialmio?

Dialmio is a call management CRM: an Android app that turns each call a salesperson makes, picks up or misses into a lead record carrying an outcome, a note and a follow-up date, paired with a web dashboard where the owner watches the whole team as the day runs. Calls travel over the SIM inside each phone.

What does a call management CRM actually do?

A call management CRM connects the phone to the customer record. The record opens as a call starts, with the previous note visible; a sheet collects the result and the next step as the call ends; unanswered calls line up for a callback; and the owner gets call counts, talk minutes and outcomes per person with no report to chase. Dialmio does all four from a single Android app.

Which phones does Dialmio run on?

Android handsets on version 8 or later, which is almost any phone sold in recent years. Callers need nothing more than that. Owners and managers open the dashboard in a browser on a laptop, a tablet or a phone, iPhone included.

A list of calls that somebody is actually going to make

What people ask about call queues

Is this the same as a call centre queue?

No, and the words collide unhelpfully. In a contact centre a queue holds callers waiting for an agent. On a handset tool it means the opposite: a list of people your team is going to ring, in an order somebody chose. One is customers waiting; the other is work waiting.

What should decide the order?

How close somebody is to deciding, not when they arrived. Working a list top to bottom by date leaves the person who asked for a quotation yesterday behind fifty who only downloaded something. Order by stage and the day pays better for the same effort.

How long should a queue be?

Short enough to finish. A queue of four hundred that nobody clears becomes a thing people avoid opening, and once it is avoided the whole arrangement quietly stops working. Better a list of forty that empties every day.

Who should own a queue?

One named person per queue, always. Shared ownership of a list produces the same outcome as no ownership, because everybody assumes the calls at the top were somebody else responsibility.

The facts worth lifting

  • In a contact centre a queue holds waiting customers; on a handset tool it holds waiting work.
  • Ordering a call list by stage rather than by arrival date pays more for the same effort.
  • A queue too long to finish becomes a list people avoid opening.
  • A shared queue with no named owner behaves exactly like a queue with no owner.
  • A queue that empties daily is worth more than a longer one that never does.

Where this comes from

  • The two meanings of the word are both in common use, which is why this page separates them explicitly.
  • Definitions on this page were last reviewed on the date shown above.

What this page does not claim

  • We make a tool with queues in it, so treat the guidance on queue length as an argument for a way of working rather than a measured finding.
